Jesus--More Than Just A Good Man

Written by Walter B. Edwards    Wednesday, 21 September 2011 14:27
Dr. Lynn Anderson whose book, If I Really Believe, Why Do I Have These Doubts, we are using as a basis for our current series of articles, recognized that Jesus’ human existence is not the only problem for those who question His claims of divinity.  Yes, He was a good man and outstanding teacher but the actual Son of God?  Admittedly, He made some notable claims such as:  “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:1).  Again, “I am the bread of life” and “I am the light of the world” (John 6:35; 8:12).  He even goes so far as to claim:  “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).  If He was not who He claimed to be, He was one of the world’s greatest deceivers and liars.  He was, however, the fulfillment of scores of
prophecies made hundreds of years before He was born.  Consider just a few examples:
To be born of a virgin—Isaiah 7:14; Luke 1:26-35.
To be born in Bethlehem—Micah 5:2; Matt. 2:1.
To be the Son of God—Psalm 2:7; Matt. 3:17; Luke 1:32; Rom. 1:4.
To be a prophet—Deut. 18:15; Acts 3:22.
To be a Priest—Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 5:6; 6:20.
To be a descendant of Abraham—Gen. 12:3; Matt. 1:1.
To be of the tribe of Judah—Gen. 49:10; Hebrews 7:14-17.
To be a descendant of David—II Sam. 7:12-16; Matt. 1:1; Luke 1:69-70; John 7:42.
Bethlehem’s sons to be killed at Jesus’ coming—Jeremiah 31:15; Matt. 2:16-18.
Jesus would live in Egypt for only a short time while still young—Hosea 11:1; Matt.
2:14-15.
We have considered only ten prophecies of which Jesus was the fulfillment and all of these related to only His birth and early years.  There are scores and scores of other Old Testament prophecies which Jesus fulfilled.  This body of evidence is very impressive. “He was more than a good man and wise teacher.  He said He was the embodiment of God’s truth in human form.  This is why He said: “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.’  But he did more than make claims.  He backed up those claims with miraculous demonstrations of supernatural power.  He healed the blind, deaf, mute, and leprous.  He drove out demons, quieted storms and even mastered death by, for example, raising Lazarus.”
He was divinity in human form.  His birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension were very impressive.  But why do we need a divine Jesus, Savior of the world? We will explore that question in our next article.  Be watching.
